觀影線索|clues of viewing

what is clue of viewings?
each year, smff screens films on various issues all over the world. although all the films are with different space-time background and involve different social topics, they are in fact inter-related.

smff offers another angles for film watching, not to do categorization, but to seek possible linkages between films and different issues. it is called “clues of viewing". hope we (smff and audiences) can re-learn different issues from another point of view according to the following clues this year:

cross.connect
Must grassroots of different ethnicity and identity fight against each other?
Or may grassroots walk together against oppression from government and corporation?
You are supporting me while I am supporting you?

Bosnian, herzegovinian, korean women workers,unions in  japan, young villagers of mainland china, evicted kaifongs of hong kong ‘s old districts, physically challenged, sex workers, and also you and me;
when we talk about international alliances,
apart from “allied" with superpowers,
grassroots with different languages and different physical function statuses,
may also ally with each other
and together to live a much stronger life.

indeed, how can we differentiate or divide  “different"?
if we don’t want to be differentiated nor divided,
how could you, me, he or she to cross and connect?

Small scale social movement
Every human being entails blood, tears, sweat and shit,
The more original ones, the more invisible sublime power they have!
small scale, a small potato may also be an eager beaver,
from a worker fighting one on one against big boss to a group of people walking on the streets to fight for democracy,
as tiny as little mosquitoes
as huge as cockroaches on march
facing totalitarians, injustice,
looks like going to be collapsing at the first blow,
but indeed every second we/they are shaking those immense power

growing
not the sales/marketing of fables from those succeeded, growing, is the actual grasping of “weapons" for resistance by the powerless
across the ocean the fledgling female workers formed alliance
an honest-to-goodness yet feeble driver fist-fought the boss, the bully
grassroot underdogs seek/cultivate free land of livelihood in hard-fought tussles against capitalist-states
first touch of the body slowly unlocks the infinite possibilities in the world

we observe the process that happened like the movement of sands in hourglass
rare are the people born with bravery, strength grows in the environment of oppression
overcoming the limiting self, allying with he, she, it, them, ta, to break through every fence
from these the movement develops unforeseeable power and toughness
no end game, the road of struggle ahead still long, let’s use our whole lives, growing and walking together

Old Movements New Contexts
Humanity’s history is a history of Struggles.
Oppression never ceases, so as the Resistance of the People.
The Oppressed stands up to fight for their rights, at any given time.
To revisit the history of movements,
Is to retrieve the lost memories of past Resistance;
To recover the smells, the emotions,
Of those who were once at the front;
To retrace the trains of thoughts born from those moments.
Yet, we might be able to melt the pieces of history together,
Still how can we melt them into the space we live in now?
How do we break free from the “what if”,
And to lament neither our former glories nor our scars?
How do we reject the cliché of “historical recurrence”,
Where we could find only tragedies or farce?
How do we learn from the past,
And find new possibilities?
